PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Many addiction counselors were trained in the rich tradition of 12-Step recovery programs, yet staying abreast of emerging evidence-based practices may require a counselor to look beyond his or her initial training. One area of new information that may benefit the field of addiction treatment involves the use of medications as an adjunct to the counseling and behavioral therapies that have been widely embraced by psychosocial treatment programs. This on-line course is designed to enhance the counselor’s depth of understanding of addiction as a brain disease, and to encourage counselors to consider the role medications might play in improving treatment outcomes for some individuals with substance abuse problems.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this program participants will be able to

Describe the disease concept of addiction as it relates to neurobiology.
Identify pharmacotherapies currently available for use in addiction treatment.
Discuss barriers to using pharmacotherapies in practice settings, as well as possible strategies to overcome these barriers.
