Child and Adolescent ObesityAdvances: Identifying Evidence-Based Strategies for Family Physicians
Overweight and obesity have reached epidemic proportions and are one of the most pressing public health issues facing our nation. And while the adult obesity epidemic is alarming, obesity in children is of the utmost concern. This CME online program will provide valuable information regarding the importance of screening all patients for obesity and promoting physical activity and healthy eating. Drs. Blair and Dunn will discuss current trends in childhood obesity and give evidence-based strategies for family physicians to address this growing concern.

Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, physicians should be able to:
Participants will understand trends related to obesity in children and how the increase is related to and increase in other chronic diseases.
Participants will be able to list three behaviors outlined by CDC, as being important to address obesity.
Participants will understand evidence-based strategies to increase physical activity.
Participants will understand the energy balance equation and the importance of both physical activity and food and beverage intake in addressing obesity.
Participants will be able to identify evidence-based strategies for family physicians to address overweight and obesity.

This program is sponsored by the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians (NCAFP) and made possible by a grant from the Health and Wellness Trust Fund Commission.
This activity has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 1.5 Prescribed credit(s) by the American Academy of Family Physicians. Of these credits, .75 conform(s) to the AAFP criteria for evidence-based CME clinical content. CME credit has been increased to reflect 2 for 1 credit for only the EB CME portion. AAFP accreditation begins 10/31/07. The term of approval is for two year(s) from this date with option for yearly renewal. When reporting AAFP credit, report total Prescribed credit for this activity. It is not necessary to label credit as evidence-based CME for reporting purposes.
The EB CME credit awarded for this activity was based on practice recommendations that were the most current with the strongest level of evidence available at the time this activity was approved. Since clinical research is ongoing, AAFP recommends that learners verify sources and review these and other recommendations prior to implementation into practice.
AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. When applying for the AMA PRA, Prescribed credit earned must be reported as Prescribed credit, not as Category 1.

Dr. Blair graduated from East Carolina School of Medicine in 1987, and completed his residency at East Carolina University in 1990. He has been an active NCAFP member, serving on the CME Committee, acting as Program Chairman for several CME programs, and sitting on the NCAFP Board of Directors since 1997. He is a past president of the NCAFP. Dr. Blair is currently chairman of the American Academy of Family Physicians’ (AAFP) Council on Health of the Public. Dr. Blair also serves nationally on the AAFP Committee on Rural Health. Dr. Blair has been in private practice in Wallace, NC since 1990 at Blair Family Medicine.

Dr. Dunn is a Nutrition Specialist with the NC Cooperative Extension Service, NC State University. She provides program expertise and state-wide leadership for children’s nutrition and wellness. She conducts in-service education programs in child nutrition, physical activity and women’s wellness. She develops nutrition education materials to be used by extension agents across North Carolina and links with other state level agencies dealing with nutrition and health concerns. Carolyn is the author/developer for numerous programs and tools that address healthy eating and physical activity. She is the co-author of Color Me Healthy, the award winning nutrition and physical activity program for children ages four and five. She has developed several multimedia programs for children and adults and frequently uses technology and multimedia for nutrition and physical activity education. Governor Easley appointed Carolyn to the Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Task Force where she serves as chair of the Prevention Committee. She is a member of Sigma Xi, the scientific research society and the Academy for Outstanding Faculty Engaged in Extension. Carolyn’s passions are travel, cooking, art and design.
